I Will Try My Best to Keep Up with the Fast Development of Gambling Industry. Story by Lawyer Jakub Kolomičenko
Jakub Kolomičenko is the Head of Legal Department at Endrophina, a company developing online casino games (Taboo, Durga, Jetsetter, and others).
He started his practice as a corporate lawyer and member of the Czech Bar Association but then shifted to the protection of intellectual rights. Currently, Jakub Kolomičenko focuses on legal aspects of gambling business. He is an expert in licensing, regulations, and compliance.
The lawyer told us how he began to explore gambling legal aspects and described special features of Endorphina operations.
“My first practice was being a paralegal for an attorney whose main agenda was family law”
My mom once told me that I started to argue the second after I learned how to talk. The final breakthrough for me was after watching the movie My cousin Vinnie. This is when I decided that I wanted to be a criminal lawyer. :-) My first practice was being a paralegal for an attorney whose main agenda was family law and everything related to it, including criminal law. After this experience, I decided that business law would suit me better.
“When I started in Endorphina 5 years ago, I didn’t know anything about the gambling industry”
I got into gambling legal aspects accidentally. Initially, I used my expertise for IT/IP law. When I started in Endorphina 5 years ago, I didn’t know anything about the gambling industry.
Sure, I was in Vegas and I played poker every now and then but I had no idea how huge and complex the industry is. I started to learn and gain some experience and hopefully my knowledge about the gambling law got better over the years.
“I felt that it was time to change from a private practice to an in-house sector”
Earlier, my field of expertise was in IT/IP. But I felt that it was time to change from a private practice to an in-house sector for a variety of reasons. Back then, Endorphina was looking for a lawyer and the job description looked interesting so I applied and it worked.
The company grew over the years, so it was obvious that it won’t be in my power to take care of all the aspects of the work by myself, so I started to develop a team to share tasks and the overall experience.
“I started to develop a team to share tasks and the overall experience”
I am always saying that our marketing department keeps me busy. Their creativity is amazing and they are always coming up with great ideas. Those ideas, however, brought (and will bring) me a lot of headache and challenges. I can mention for example a previous task to get live kittens into an expo that explicitly prohibits the presence of live animals.
I am supervising all legal and compliance issues connected with our area of business. The best way to overcome any issue is, of course, a good legal background with a combination of creativity and an “outside of the box way of thinking”. Vigilantibus jura scripta sunt (The laws of the vigilant are written).
“I would like to contribute to a better and smarter regulation of gambling”
Even though many stories come to my mind, I am afraid that I cannot disclose them due to confidentiality. My professional plans for the future are simple. I will try my best to keep up with the fast development of our company and gambling industry in general. Also, I would like to contribute to a better and smarter regulation and understanding of gambling.
Lawyer Jakub Kolomičenko will be involved in the panel discussion: Responsible gambling as the future of gambling. Industry experts will talk about gambling security measures on June 21 at Zurich iGaming Affiliate Conference.
